Homes move. In North Texas, where expansive clay soil swells and shrinks with the seasons, they move more than most. Some of what that movement produces is entirely cosmetic. Some of it is telling you something. Knowing which is which stops you from either panicking or papering over a genuine issue.
Usually cosmetic: hairline cracks above doors and windows
Short, thin cracks radiating diagonally from the top corner of a door or window frame are the most common drywall complaint in the metroplex. Those corners are natural stress points, and seasonal soil movement concentrates there.
If the crack is narrow, stable in length over months, and the door still opens and closes properly, it is a normal repair: open it slightly, tape it, float it flat, match the texture and repaint the area.
Usually cosmetic: nail pops in newer homes
Small round bumps or flakes in a straight vertical line are nail or screw pops, where a fastener has backed out slightly as framing lumber dried and shrank. They are extremely common in homes under about five years old and are not a structural concern.
The correct fix is to drive a new screw an inch or two away, remove or reset the popped fastener, then patch and texture. Simply filling over the bump guarantees it comes back.
Worth investigating: stains, softness and smell
Discoloration is different from cracking. A brown or yellow ring, a patch of drywall that feels soft or spongy, bubbling paint, or a persistent musty smell all point to moisture, and moisture always has a source.
- Ceiling stains directly below a bathroom — likely a supply or drain leak
- Stains on an exterior wall — often failed caulking, flashing or roof intrusion
- Soft or crumbling drywall — water has been present long enough to break down the gypsum
- Musty odour with no visible stain — worth opening up and checking behind the wall
Worth investigating: cracks that keep growing
A crack that is wider than a credit card edge, that runs across a ceiling and continues down a wall, or that measurably lengthens over a few months is behaving differently from normal seasonal movement.
The same is true if doors and windows near the crack start sticking, or if you can see daylight or feel a draft. Those are foundation-related symptoms, and patching the drywall before the cause is addressed just means repairing the same wall again next year.
Why texture matching is half the job
A structurally perfect drywall repair still looks wrong if the texture does not match. Knockdown, orange peel and skip trowel each have a distinct pattern and density, and a patch with the wrong one is visible from across the room.
Matching involves testing the spray pattern on a scrap board first and adjusting until it reads the same as the surrounding wall. It is the step that determines whether a repair disappears or announces itself permanently.
The bottom line
Patch cosmetic cracks and nail pops with confidence. But if you see stains, softness, growing cracks or sticking doors, find the cause before you close up the wall.
